What is naturopathic medicine?
In Oregon, Naturopathic Doctors are licensed health practitioners that are recognized as primary care providers by the State. The Oregon Board of Naturopathic Medicine, regulates naturopathic doctors. Oregon’s medicaid, Oregon Health Plan, has specific policies that allow members to utilize naturopathic doctors as their primary care providers.
Naturopathic doctors undergo a 4 year doctoral program at one of the naturopathic medical schools. In the State of Oregon, they must be licensed to practice. Licensing requires a doctorate of naturopathic medicine degree, passing two naturopathic board examinations, a State jurisprudence examination, criminal and background checks, and completion of annual medical education hours. What services do Naturopathic Doctors provide, what can I expect?
In Oregon, naturopathic doctors are primary care providers. We serve as a first contact for your undiagnosed health concern. We are able to diagnose conditions, order labs, order imaging, and refer you to specialist care when indicated. We are able to perform minor surgery and prescribe pharmaceutical medications. We, also, are specialists in wellness and are trained heavily in nutrition, lifestyle, physical, and other supportive medicines.
Our first appointment, if not an acute condition, is usually an hour and a half. We gather a full health history that covers biological, psychological, and sociological topics. We really get to know you as a person. Lee also uses a narrative medical approach. This allows us to look at all the dimensions that are related to your health or illness and see how they have shaped and informed your experience.
